The
South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has welcoemed the Parliamentary
Portfolio Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation at its Hermanus
facility as part of the committee’s ongoing oversight programme, accompanied by
representatives from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI).
During
the visit, SANSA briefed the delegation on its latest research achievements,
highlighting the agency’s role as a key driver of space science research within
both a national and continental context. The presentation showcased outcomes
from SANSA’s research cohort, demonstrating how scientific excellence underpins
the country’s growing space capabilities.
The
agency also outlined how its research activities directly support operational
services, particularly the 24-hour Space Weather Centre based in Hermanus. The
centre plays a critical national role by monitoring space weather conditions
and helping to mitigate potential disruptions to technological systems,
including communications, navigation and power infrastructure.
The
oversight engagement provided an opportunity for lawmakers and government
officials to assess SANSA’s infrastructure, research outputs and strategic
contribution to South Africa’s space science and innovation ecosystem.
