Botswana
has commemorated its first Data Protection Day since the enactment of the Data
Protection Act of 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country’s
efforts to strengthen data governance and privacy protection.
The
commemoration was held under the theme “Take Control of Your Data,” with a
focus on raising public awareness about the rights and responsibilities of
citizens in an increasingly digital environment. The Ministry for State
President, Defence and Security underscored the importance of empowering
citizens with knowledge on how personal data is collected, used, and protected.
Key
institutions involved in the digital and regulatory ecosystem, including the
Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA), participated in the
event, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding personal information and
supporting the effective implementation of the Data Protection Act.
The
observance highlighted Botswana’s growing emphasis on data protection as a
critical pillar for trust, security, and sustainable digital transformation, as
the country continues to expand its digital services and connectivity.
