The
Director of Connectivity and Secure Communications at the European Space Agency
(ESA) and Head of ECSAT, Laurent Jaffart has emphasized the importance of aligning
national capabilities with European and ESA initiatives to strengthen Europe’s
resilience in secure communications.
Speaking
during a visit to Latvia, an Associate Member State of ESA, Jaffart noted that
closer alignment enables the development of stronger, more integrated
solutions, including dual-use technologies that support both civilian and
security needs. He stressed that in the current geopolitical environment,
secure and resilient communications infrastructure has become a strategic
priority for Europe.
Jaffart
described Latvia as a growing hub for space sector innovation, highlighting the
country’s industrial expertise as a valuable asset for Europe’s competitiveness
and growth in satellite communications. He pointed to Latvia’s dynamic
industrial ecosystem as an essential contributor to advancing secure
connectivity capabilities across the continent.
During
his engagements, Jaffart held discussions with representatives from Latvia’s
Ministry of Education and Science, as well as stakeholders from the national
space and industrial community. A central theme emerging from these exchanges
was the need to deepen cooperation to enhance technological capabilities and
accelerate progress in secure satellite communications.
He
concluded that strengthened collaboration between national actors, ESA and
European initiatives will be key to building an advanced digital future, one
that reinforces Europe’s strategic autonomy and leadership in space-based
connectivity and secure communications.
