Nigeria’s
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has underscored
the growing role of technology in modern diplomacy and regional stability
following high-level engagements on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum
2026.
Speaking
after meetings held on Day Three of WEF26, Ambassador Tuggar said he met with
Google’s Senior Vice President, James Manyika, to discuss strengthening the
Nigeria–Google relationship as a strategic partnership anchored in artificial
intelligence, early warning systems and information integrity.
The
discussions explored potential collaboration around Nigeria’s Artificial
Intelligence Unit, the Regional Partnership for Democracy and the Foreign
Service Academy. These platforms were identified as key enablers for
anticipatory governance, skills development and the deployment of trusted
information systems, with particular relevance to Nigeria, the Sahel and the
wider region.
According
to the Minister, the engagement reflects Nigeria’s intention to align public
sector priorities with private sector innovation in order to enhance stability,
build institutional capacity and generate long-term value. He noted that as
technology increasingly shapes diplomatic practice, partnerships with global
technology firms are becoming essential to addressing complex governance and
security challenges.
The
meeting forms part of Nigeria’s broader engagement at WEF26, where the country
is advancing conversations on the intersection of diplomacy, technology and
sustainable development.
