Nigeria’s
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani,
has visited Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where he delivered a
keynote address highlighting the critical role of academic institutions in
shaping the country’s digital and economic future.

During
the visit, Dr. Tijani underscored OAU’s longstanding legacy of excellence,
noting the institution’s contribution to producing leaders across technology,
infrastructure, and enterprise. He described the university as a strong example
of how academic rigour, when aligned with national development objectives, can
drive innovation and economic growth.
In
line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and through
the Universal Service Provision Fund, the Minister announced a package of
support aimed at strengthening the university’s digital and research capacity.
The initiative includes the deployment of up to 30 kilometres of fibre-optic
infrastructure across academic buildings and student hostels to enhance
connectivity and digital access on campus.

In
addition to infrastructure development, funding was announced for one
professorial research grant, three post-doctoral positions, and three PhD
scholarships in priority areas of Nigeria’s digital economy under the National
Digital Economy Research Scheme. The support is intended to advance research,
talent development, and innovation within the higher education sector.
The
visit reflects the federal government’s broader strategy to position
universities as key partners in building a more innovative, inclusive, and
digitally empowered Nigeria through sustained investment in infrastructure,
research, and human capital.
