The
Kenya Space Agency (KSA), in collaboration with the University of Nairobi’s
Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (C4DLab) and Expertise
France, has launched the Earth Observation Hackathon 2026 aimed at promoting
data-driven innovation and practical applications of space technology.

The
hackathon officially commenced on January 13 at the University of Nairobi and
brings together multidisciplinary student teams for an intensive, hands-on
innovation programme focused on the use of real Earth observation datasets.
Over the course of two days, participants are engaging in problem
identification, solution design, data analysis, and rapid prototyping under the
guidance of experienced mentors.
The
solutions being developed are targeted at addressing pressing national and
global challenges, including climate resilience, agriculture, public health,
urban planning, disaster management, and environmental sustainability. By
working directly with Earth observation data, participants are encouraged to
design practical tools that can support evidence-based decision-making across
multiple sectors.

The
initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Kenya Space Agency and its
partners to strengthen national capabilities in the application of space
technologies. It also seeks to nurture a new generation of innovators equipped
with the technical skills and analytical capacity required to translate
satellite data into impactful, real-world solutions.
