Twenty
young Rwandans with visual and hearing impairments have graduated as certified
coders under the first-ever training cohort of Rwanda Assistive Technology
Access (RATA), marking a milestone in inclusive digital skills development in
the country.
The
graduation ceremony was held at the Digital Transformation Center in Kigali and
brought to a close a seven-month intensive coding programme designed to equip
persons with disabilities with practical, market-relevant digital skills. The
programme focused on hands-on training tailored to the specific needs of
participants, enabling them to acquire competencies aligned with current
demands in the digital economy.

Rwanda
Assistive Technology Access was founded in 2018 by Rene William Ngabo as a
non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting access to assistive
technologies and digital skills for persons with disabilities. The organization
works to bridge gaps in access to devices, software, and specialized training,
with the goal of ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind in
Rwanda’s digital transformation journey.
The
graduation of the first cohort underscores the growing emphasis on inclusive
innovation and highlights the potential of targeted training programmes to
expand employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for persons with
disabilities in the technology sector.
