UNDP
Egypt, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Development, has launched the
Urban Climate Resilience Project in Damietta, marking the first phase of a
broader initiative aimed at strengthening climate-resilient urban development
in high-risk governorates.

Damietta
was selected for its vulnerability to climate threats, including sea-level
rise, coastal erosion, and saltwater intrusion. The project will enhance
risk-informed urban planning, improve climate-risk information systems, bolster
emergency preparedness, and empower local communities.
Chitose
Noguchi, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative, said the collaboration represents
a significant step in protecting over one million residents while establishing
Damietta as a model for climate adaptation in Egypt and the region.

The
signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local
Development and Acting Minister of Environment, alongside senior officials from
UNDP and relevant government departments.
