The
European Union and the Government of Nigeria have advanced plans to deliver
large-scale broadband connectivity through Project Bridge, an ambitious digital
infrastructure programme aimed at expanding fast and reliable internet access
across the country.
The
initiative targets internet coverage for more than 70 percent of Nigeria’s
population through the deployment of over 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic
infrastructure. The network is expected to support households, businesses,
schools and hospitals, strengthening the country’s digital foundation.
The
project was announced by European Commissioner for International Partnerships
Jozef Síkela alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and
Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani. As part of the initiative, the European
Union committed €45 million in investment to accelerate implementation.
According
to the partners, the investment is expected to drive job creation, strengthen
digital skills, and deliver secure and high-quality connectivity, while also
opening opportunities for European companies providing trusted digital
technologies.
