The
draft National Digital Payment Strategy 2026–2030 (NDPS 2.0) has been
officially launched at the Ethiopia Digital Payment Conference 2.0 in Addis
Ababa. The strategy was unveiled by the National Bank of Ethiopia in the
presence of Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh, Governor of the National
Bank of Ethiopia Eyob Tekalign, Secretary-General of the African Continental
Free Trade Area Wamkele Mene, ministers, and other senior government officials.

The
new five-year strategic framework builds on the evaluation of the National
Digital Payment Strategy 2021–2024 and outlines a vision for a trusted,
innovative, integrated, and accessible digital payments ecosystem. It aims to
connect all Ethiopians across gender, geography, age, and ability, with a focus
on expanding equitable access to financial opportunities and strengthening
financial inclusion nationwide.
Alongside
the launch of NDPS 2.0, key developments in Ethiopia’s digital payments
infrastructure were also announced. These included the introduction of
EthioPay, an upgraded Instant Payment System launched by EthSwitch, and the
release of Ethiopia’s Digital Payments Performance Report 2024–2025 by the
National Bank of Ethiopia.

The
announcements underscore Ethiopia’s continued commitment to advancing a modern
and interoperable digital payments ecosystem that supports economic growth,
innovation, and regional integration.
