Microsoft
President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Samer Abu-Ltaif, has lauded
Africa’s accelerating embrace of artificial intelligence, saying the continent
is not waiting for the future but actively shaping it. During a visit to South
Africa this week, Abu-Ltaif noted that AI-driven innovation is emerging across
key sectors, from fintech solutions advancing financial inclusion to government
initiatives improving healthcare and public service delivery.
Abu-Ltaif
highlighted Microsoft’s growing partnership with MTN, Africa’s largest mobile
operator, as a leading example of how collaboration is expanding digital
participation. In discussions with MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita and
his leadership team, he emphasized the companies’ joint efforts to provide MTN
customers with access to AI-powered tools through Microsoft 365 with Copilot,
enabling users to work, learn and collaborate more effectively and securely.
Microsoft
says such partnerships are playing a key role in closing the digital skills gap
and supporting South Africa’s shift from basic connectivity toward deeper, more
meaningful digital engagement.
According
to Abu-Ltaif, the rapid uptake of AI solutions across Africa reflects the
continent’s ambition to build a competitive, future-ready digital economy
powered by local talent and innovation.
