Rwanda
has officially launched eKash, its National Digital Payment System, marking a
major milestone in the country’s drive toward a fully cashless economy. The new
platform is designed to provide seamless and interoperable digital payments
accessible to all citizens, strengthening Rwanda’s financial ecosystem and
accelerating its digital transformation agenda.

The
announcement was made by the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA), which
described eKash as a national digital public good built to enhance the
efficiency, security and affordability of digital transactions. The system
brings together banks, mobile money operators and fintech players under a
unified payment framework to ensure smooth interoperability across platforms.
RISA
expressed appreciation to key partners whose collaboration enabled the rollout
of the system, including RSwitch, the National Bank of Rwanda, Access to
Finance Rwanda, AfricaNenda Foundation, the Gates Foundation and the Mojaloop
Foundation community. The multi-stakeholder partnership is credited with
aligning technology, policy and infrastructure to create a payment system that
supports inclusive economic growth.

The
launch of eKash is expected to expand access to digital financial services,
reduce transaction costs and improve transparency and convenience for
individuals and businesses. Authorities say the move reinforces Rwanda’s
commitment to innovation-driven development and positions the country as a
regional leader in digital public infrastructure.
