The
Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) has passed the Preliminary Design Review for the
infrared thermal imaging system it will contribute to China’s Chang’e-8 lunar
lander, marking a major milestone in Egypt’s expanding role in global space
exploration.
The
review meeting was held on December 4, 2025, in the presence of a high-level
Chinese delegation, as part of ongoing cooperation between EgSA and the China
National Space Administration (CNSA). The engagement focused on strengthening
bilateral collaboration in lunar exploration and advancing technical
coordination for Egypt’s participation in the mission.

Scientific
and technical discussions were led by Dr. Ayman Mahmoud, Head of the Central
Department for Space Programs at EgSA, alongside the agency’s engineering team.
The Chinese side was represented by Professor Bai Zhao Yu, Chief of the
Chang’e-8 Mission Team at CNSA.
During
the exchanges, Egyptian experts presented the payload’s engineering and
technological designs, confirming system readiness and outlining the testing
and integration processes required before launch. The sessions also covered
joint operational planning and mechanisms for aligning Egyptian and Chinese
systems to ensure mission compatibility.
Both
parties signed the Preliminary Design Acceptance Certificate at the conclusion
of the review and exchanged commemorative shields, underscoring the strength of
their scientific partnership.

The
achievement reinforces EgSA’s growing regional leadership in space innovation
and its ability to contribute to major international missions, further
elevating Egypt’s presence on the global space exploration landscape.
