Barcelona has become the first city to officially endorse the United Nations Open Source Principles, a move that underscores the city’s commitment to openness, transparency, and digital sovereignty.

Assistant Secretary-General and Chief Information Technology Officer Bernardo Mariano Junior congratulated the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona during the announcement, highlighting the city’s leadership in advancing open digital collaboration across governments and public institutions.

With this endorsement, Barcelona joins a growing global network of over 150 organizations, including national governments such as France and major open source foundations, that support the UN’s Open Source Principles.

The initiative is driven by the Open Source Community of Practice, led by the UN International Computing Centre (UNICC) and the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT).
