The
Gabonese Agency for Space Studies and Observations (AGEOS) is participating in
the second and final Continental Forum of Phase II of the GMES & Africa
programme, taking place from December 1 to 3 in Cairo, Egypt. The event marks a
key milestone in the African Union’s efforts to strengthen the continent’s
Earth Observation (EO) capabilities.

Held
under the theme “GMES & Africa: A Journey Towards the Establishment of an
African Roadmap for Earth Observation as a Key Pillar of a Sustainable Space
Economy,” the forum brings together policymakers, scientists, academics,
private and public institutions, NGOs, international partners, and user
communities. Its objective is to align Earth Observation initiatives with
Africa’s socioeconomic development priorities.
AGEOS,
represented by Director General Aboubakar Mambimba Ndjoungui, is contributing
to discussions on defining Africa’s EO roadmap and ensuring Gabon’s national
priorities—including sustainable resource management, environmental protection
and climate resilience—are reflected in the continental strategy. The agency’s
presence also supports efforts to reinforce its role as a key Earth Observation
service provider in Central Africa.

The
forum provides AGEOS an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, promote Gabon’s
achievements in the use of spatial data, and explore cooperation prospects for
the next phase of the GMES & Africa programme. Discussions will cover the
consolidation of EO services in Gabon, regional collaboration,
capacity-building in the national space sector, and the integration of EO data
into public policy for sustainable natural resource management.
