The
University of Ghana (UG) has strengthened its international research,
technology, and innovation partnerships through a high-level working visit to
four provinces in China, including Shenzhen, Beijing, Henan, and Zhejiang. The
visit, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, aimed to support the
University’s 2024–2029 Strategic Plan by fostering collaboration with leading
Chinese universities, research institutions, and technology companies.

The
delegation commenced its trip in Shenzhen with engagements at Huawei’s Data
Communication and Storage Innovation Lab, Training Centre, Exhibition Hall, and
R&D campus. These sessions highlighted Huawei’s investment in research and
talent development, showcasing opportunities for sustained collaboration in
advanced technology and innovation.
In
Beijing, the team visited Peking University’s High-Performance Computing
Platform to explore university-industry research collaboration and toured
Huawei’s Wangfujing Flagship Store to witness applications of emerging digital
technologies. A courtesy call on Ghana’s Ambassador to China, H.E. Kojo Bonsu,
focused on supporting Ghanaian students and expanding digital skills
development, with plans to provide training for 20 UG students and access to
research partnerships.

The
delegation continued to Zhengzhou in Henan Province, where visits to Henan
University of Animal Husbandry and Economy, large-scale automated poultry
farms, and technology firms emphasized China’s integration of industry with
research and applied STEM education. Discussions included operationalizing an
existing memorandum of understanding between UG and Henan University.
In
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the delegation attended the 2025 Board Meeting of
the UG Confucius Institute with Zhejiang University of Technology, reviewing
progress and planning programs for 2026 to strengthen cultural and academic
exchange.
Throughout
the visit, the UG delegation observed China’s coordinated development strategy
driven by investment in people, systems, and technology, opening new
opportunities for research collaboration, technology partnerships, and
innovation-led growth.

Prof.
Amfo expressed gratitude to all partner institutions and the Ghana Embassy in
Beijing, emphasizing that these strengthened partnerships will create
meaningful opportunities for students and faculty while positioning the
University of Ghana as a leading institution contributing to national
development through global engagement.
