The University of Ghana (UG) has strengthened its international research, technology, and innovation partnerships through a high-level working visit to four provinces in China, including Shenzhen, Beijing, Henan, and Zhejiang. The visit, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, aimed to support the University’s 2024–2029 Strategic Plan by fostering collaboration with leading Chinese universities, research institutions, and technology companies.

The delegation commenced its trip in Shenzhen with engagements at Huawei’s Data Communication and Storage Innovation Lab, Training Centre, Exhibition Hall, and R&D campus. These sessions highlighted Huawei’s investment in research and talent development, showcasing opportunities for sustained collaboration in advanced technology and innovation.

In Beijing, the team visited Peking University’s High-Performance Computing Platform to explore university-industry research collaboration and toured Huawei’s Wangfujing Flagship Store to witness applications of emerging digital technologies. A courtesy call on Ghana’s Ambassador to China, H.E. Kojo Bonsu, focused on supporting Ghanaian students and expanding digital skills development, with plans to provide training for 20 UG students and access to research partnerships.

The delegation continued to Zhengzhou in Henan Province, where visits to Henan University of Animal Husbandry and Economy, large-scale automated poultry farms, and technology firms emphasized China’s integration of industry with research and applied STEM education. Discussions included operationalizing an existing memorandum of understanding between UG and Henan University.

In Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the delegation attended the 2025 Board Meeting of the UG Confucius Institute with Zhejiang University of Technology, reviewing progress and planning programs for 2026 to strengthen cultural and academic exchange.

Throughout the visit, the UG delegation observed China’s coordinated development strategy driven by investment in people, systems, and technology, opening new opportunities for research collaboration, technology partnerships, and innovation-led growth.

Prof. Amfo expressed gratitude to all partner institutions and the Ghana Embassy in Beijing, emphasizing that these strengthened partnerships will create meaningful opportunities for students and faculty while positioning the University of Ghana as a leading institution contributing to national development through global engagement.
