The 13th edition of the World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) has
opened today at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, marking
the start of a week-long gathering dedicated to strengthening the role of
science journalism in society. Running from 1–5 December 2025, the conference
brings together science journalists, researchers, policymakers, and media
stakeholders from around the world.

Hosted
by the South African Science Journalists’ Association, WCSJ 2025 is supported
by the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa (SDCfA)—a joint initiative of the
Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the Council for
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This year’s theme, “Science
journalism and social justice: journalism that builds understanding and
resilience,” places a special focus on the responsibility of journalism in
addressing global inequalities and enhancing public trust in science.
Throughout
the week, delegates will share insights, exchange best practices, and engage in
discussions on how science journalism can drive inclusive development, counter
misinformation, and help communities navigate pressing challenges such as
climate change, health crises, and technological disruption.

The
conference aims to foster collaborations, empower science reporters, and
strengthen the capacity of journalism to inform, educate, and build resilience
across societies at a time when accurate and accessible science communication
is more essential than ever.
