The
inaugural Pierre Ouédraogo Prize, established by the Information Technology and
Communication Council (ITCC) to celebrate African excellence in digital
innovation and leadership, was held on November 29, 2025, under the
chairmanship of Burkina Faso’s Minister of Digital Transition, Dr. Aminata
Zerbo/Sabane. The ceremony brought together sector leaders, experts and key
stakeholders in a shared effort to advance a sovereign, responsible and
impactful digital ecosystem across the continent.

The
Smart ID project, developed by Wilko, emerged as the winner of the first
edition. The innovation enables rapid identification and secure access to
medical data, even offline, offering a life-saving solution that aligns with
Africa’s push for inclusive and practical digital technologies. The project was
praised for its potential to transform healthcare access and contribute
meaningfully to sustainable development.
Telecel
Faso, a partner of the event, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting
initiatives that drive innovation, strengthen digital inclusion and promote
African talent. The company emphasised the importance of fostering a robust and
ethical digital ecosystem that delivers real value to local populations.

The
event also paid tribute to the late Pierre Ouédraogo, a pioneer of African
digital sovereignty whose legacy continues to inspire efforts toward a more
independent and impactful digital future for the continent.
