The
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released its Global
Connectivity Report 2025, calling for accelerated efforts to close persistent
digital divides and ensure that connectivity becomes a driver of inclusive and
sustainable development.
In
a foreword to the report, ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin described
connectivity as the defining infrastructure of the modern era, noting that it
underpins education, work, innovation and economic growth. She stressed that as
the world approaches the midpoint of the Decade of Action, meaningful
connectivity is essential for countries to harness artificial intelligence and
other emerging technologies.
The
report highlights the widening gap in access and quality of digital services
between and within countries. Bogdan-Martin warned that without reliable,
affordable and secure networks, progress risks benefiting only a limited
segment of the global population, potentially deepening inequalities.
She
noted that connectivity must go beyond basic Internet access to ensure that
users can participate fully and safely in the digital space. The report also
underscores the environmental and societal challenges associated with rapid
digital expansion, including misinformation, rising energy demands and the risk
of widening social divides.
Bogdan-Martin
reaffirmed the ITU’s commitment to promoting universal and meaningful
connectivity, aligned with the Global Digital Compact, and expressed gratitude
to ITU Member States, industry partners, academia and staff for their continued
contributions.
