Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann becomes first Ghanaian International Fellow of UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University of Ghana, has been inducted as the first Ghanaian International Fellow of the United Kingdom’s Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng). The induction took place in London on 18 November 2025.

She is one of only nine International Fellows elected worldwide in 2025 and is being recognized for her pioneering contributions to biomedical engineering and STEM education across Africa. A University of Pennsylvania–trained bioengineer, Professor Effah Kaufmann founded the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana and played a key role in establishing several allied health programmes.

In addition to her academic achievements, she is widely known as the NSMQ Quiz Mistress, inspiring thousands of students through her advocacy for STEM education and outreach initiatives. Her recognition by RAEng highlights her significant impact on engineering and science education both in Ghana and across the continent.
