The
African Space Agency (AfSA) has reiterated its commitment to advancing
geospatial information as a key driver of Africa’s development priorities
during the 11th session of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information
Management in Africa (UN-GGIM-Africa).

Speaking
at the session, AfSA Director-General H.E. Dr. Tidiane Ouattara stressed that
geospatial information remains fundamental to achieving both continental and
global development goals. He noted that accurate, accessible and well-governed
geospatial data underpins progress in areas such as climate resilience,
agriculture, urban planning, disaster management, and digital transformation.
Dr.
Ouattara commended the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)
for its ongoing leadership in strengthening geospatial governance across the
continent, including efforts related to the implementation of the UN Integrated
Geospatial Information Framework (UN-IGIF) and coordination of AfricaGIS 2025.
He
further underscored AfSA’s readiness to deepen collaboration with UNECA,
UN-GGIM, and Member States to accelerate geospatial capacity building, promote
data interoperability, and expand the use of space-derived information for
evidence-based decision-making.

The
session brought together regional and international stakeholders dedicated to
enhancing Africa’s geospatial ecosystem and ensuring that countries can fully
leverage spatial data for sustainable development.
