Kenya
has marked a major milestone in its national digital expansion agenda with the
commissioning of the 106-kilometre Emining–Marigat–Kabarnet–Kabartonjo Fiber
Backbone Link, a project designed to significantly enhance connectivity across
Baringo County. The new fibre infrastructure forms a critical part of the
country’s growing national backbone network and is expected to accelerate
access to digital services for communities along the corridor.

The
commissioning ceremony was led by Cabinet Secretary for Information,
Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, who described the fibre
link as a transformative investment aimed at strengthening network reliability
and extending the benefits of Kenya’s Digital Superhighway to rural areas. He
noted that improved connectivity would unlock new opportunities in sectors
including e-commerce, education, healthcare, and government service delivery.
Mr.
Kabogo was joined by Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi, Principal Secretary for
ICT and the Digital Economy Eng. John Tanui, Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap,
and other local leaders. The officials emphasised that collaboration between
national and county authorities is essential in ensuring that digital inclusion
reaches communities at the grassroots.

The
new infrastructure is expected to play a central role in enabling residents to
better participate in Kenya’s expanding digital economy, supporting aspirations
for a future where every Kenyan can connect, innovate, and thrive.
