Africa
has marked a historic milestone with the appointment of Ms. Regina Fleur
Assoumou Bessou of Côte d’Ivoire as the first African to chair the
International Telecommunication Union’s Telecommunication Development Advisory
Group (TDAG). Her selection represents a significant victory for global
cooperation and inclusive leadership within the international
telecommunications community.
The
African Telecommunications Union (ATU) confirmed the announcement, noting that
Ms. Assoumou Bessou’s new role reflects the continent’s growing influence in
shaping global digital development agendas. Her leadership is expected to bring
renewed focus to the priorities and concerns of developing regions as the ITU
continues its work to bridge digital divides and expand equitable access to
communication technologies.
In
a demonstration of unity and shared commitment to global progress, the Republic
of Korea and the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity, who had initially presented a
candidate for the position, joined the consensus in support of Ms. Assoumou
Bessou. ATU expressed appreciation to all regional blocs for rallying behind
Africa’s choice.
