Meta’s
Director of Public Policy for Africa, Balkissa Ide Siddo, has welcomed the G20
Leaders’ recent declaration emphasizing the development of Africa-centric and
sovereign AI capabilities, noting that the global stance aligns with ongoing
conversations about the continent’s digital future.

Speaking
after moderating a panel on “AI Sovereignty: Governance, Inclusion and Regional
Empowerment” at the Meta AI Summit in Dubai, she said the recognition reflects
a growing understanding that Africa must take a central role in shaping its own
AI trajectory. The panel featured experts Seydina M. Ndiaye, Amr Safwat, and
Osman Gazi Güçlütürk.
She
explained that AI sovereignty involves countries defining their own AI futures
through regulatory approaches that balance innovation, rights protection, and
accountability. She added that ensuring Africa’s diverse voices, data, and
governance models are represented in global AI dialogues is essential to the
continent’s digital empowerment.

Balkissa
stressed that the path forward requires African nations to craft clear AI
strategies, build technical capacity, invest in infrastructure, and nurture
local talent to strengthen their participation in the global AI landscape.
She
also thanked participants of the Dubai summit for contributing to the ongoing
discussions about responsible and inclusive AI development across the region.
