The
Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency
(NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE has addressed the National Symposium on
Digital Innovation in Crisis Communication at the National Defence College,
focusing on the pressing challenges of today’s information environment.

Speaking
at the invitation of the Centre for Crisis Communication, Abdullahi noted how
emerging digital tools are transforming crisis response and underscored the
need for stronger national systems. He stated that research shows false
information spreads nearly six times faster than verified news, often
triggering significant economic disruptions within minutes.
Mr.
Abdullahi highlighted recent efforts to counter misinformation, including the
removal of over 28 million fraudulent accounts and thousands of harmful posts
through collaborations with global digital platforms, demonstrating
improvements in monitoring and content moderation.

He
called for the development of robust local review frameworks, enhanced
real-time detection of harmful content, and safeguards that protect privacy
while prioritizing truth and public safety, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to
a secure and reliable digital ecosystem.
