The
President of the African Space Agency, H.E. Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, participated
in a workshop hosted by the University of Ghana’s Regional Marine Centre aimed
at strengthening Africa’s Atlantic coast capabilities for oil spill monitoring
and response. The event was organised through the GMES & Africa – MarCNoWA
Project in partnership with the UN Environment Programme, GEMS Ocean Programme,
and the ONU Environnement - Convention d’Abidjan.

The
workshop brought together environmental agencies, maritime authorities,
researchers, and industry leaders to train participants on satellite-based oil
spill detection and modeling, enhance regional coordination and data sharing,
and support the development of national and regional contingency plans. It also
focused on promoting sustainable marine and coastal management practices.

Dr.
Ouattara engaged with stakeholders throughout the workshop, emphasizing the
need for stronger regional cooperation and the use of advanced technologies to
protect Africa’s oceans. The African Space Agency (AfSA) continues to advocate
for initiatives that safeguard the continent’s marine environment for a cleaner
and more resilient future.
