Uganda
has wrapped up a three-day capacity-building workshop aimed at advancing the
country’s data governance framework. The training brought together
representatives from government institutions, civil society organizations and
the private sector to deepen understanding of the policies and systems needed
for a secure and inclusive data ecosystem.
The
workshop highlighted the importance of sound data policy and strong governance
as the foundation for a future-ready digital environment. Participants examined
regional and continental frameworks that guide national data practices, as well
as the role of core digital infrastructure, including digital identification
systems and Digital Public Infrastructure.
Discussions
also covered gender and inclusion in data governance, emerging issues such as
artificial intelligence, data-related harms and surveillance, along with
approaches for assessing national data maturity. Stakeholders further explored
opportunities for harmonizing data protection laws across the East African
Community to support regional alignment.
Organizers
say the workshop marks an important step toward building a rights-respecting
data environment that enables innovation and strengthens digital trust across
Uganda.
