The
Organisation of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) has elected Mr. Gabriel Data,
Uganda’s Assistant Commissioner for Geology, as its new President. His mandate
ushers in a renewed focus on strengthening geological mapping, mineral
exploration and capacity building across the continent.
Mr.
Data will take over from Dr. Rokhaya Samba Diène, Director General of the
Service Géologique National du Sénégal (SGNS), whose term officially ends on
December 31, 2025. Dr. Diène’s leadership significantly enhanced OAGS’s
visibility and its role in promoting cooperation among African geological
institutions.
To
ensure continuity, Dr. Diène will continue to serve as an advisor to the
organisation for the next three years, supporting the incoming leadership team
as OAGS advances its mission of modernizing geological surveys across Africa.
