Zimbabwe’s Minister of ICT,
Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, has led the country’s delegation
to the World Telecommunication Development Bureau 25 meeting in Baku for the
official launch of Dr. Cosmas Zavazava’s campaign for re-election as Director
of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT).

Hon. Mavetera described Dr.
Zavazava as a transformative leader whose first term has delivered significant
progress in advancing global digital development. She noted that his vision
aligns with the need for stronger development programmes, expanded meaningful
connectivity, and deeper international partnerships.
The launch was attended by
senior leadership of the International Telecommunication Union, including
Secretary-General Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Tomas
Lamanauskas, Radiocommunication Bureau Director Mr. Mario Maniewicz, and Telecommunication
Standardisation Bureau Director Mr. Seizo Onoe.

Hon. Mavetera said she was
encouraged by remarks from the ITU Secretary-General, who commended Zimbabwe’s
digital progress and its leadership in improving ICT access. She called on the
international community to support Dr. Zavazava’s bid for a second term,
emphasizing his commitment to innovation, capacity-building, and digital
inclusion.
The delegation will continue
its engagements ahead of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference scheduled to take
place in Qatar in 2026.
