Gabon
and Equatorial Guinea have formalised a major step toward regional digital
integration with the signing of three key cooperation agreements in Mongomo.
The agreements were signed by the ministers responsible for the digital economy
in both countries and are described as a significant milestone in strengthening
bilateral ties and fostering a unified digital space.
The
cooperation framework focuses on three core areas: cross-border fibre-optic
interconnection, the implementation of free roaming, and radio frequency
coordination. Together, these initiatives aim to improve connectivity, enhance
user experience, and support long-term digital development across the two
neighbouring nations.

The
fibre-optic interconnection agreement is expected to boost network capacity and
deliver faster, more reliable internet services. The free roaming arrangement
will allow citizens of both countries to use their mobile phones across borders
without incurring additional charges. Meanwhile, the radio frequency
coordination pact seeks to eliminate cross-border signal interference and
ensure higher-quality telecommunications services.
The
agreements follow extensive joint technical work involving key digital sector
institutions. On the Gabonese side, ARCEP, SPIN, ANINF, and mobile operators
Moov Africa Gabon Telecom and Airtel Gabon worked closely with their
counterparts in Equatorial Guinea to advance the negotiations.
Officials
emphasised that the partnership reflects the commitment of both governments to
regional integration and digital transformation. The initiative is credited to
the leadership of Gabon’s President, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, and
Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who have prioritised
cross-border cooperation in the digital sector.

Authorities
from both countries described the agreements as a foundation for deeper
collaboration, highlighting digital technology as a strategic driver for
development, sovereignty, and regional connectivity.
