The
Agence sénégalaise d'études spatiales (ASES) has officially launched
construction of the Senegalese Astronomical Observatory (OAS) in Khombole,
marking a major milestone in the country’s ambition to strengthen its presence
in global space science.
The
foundation stone ceremony, held in the Thiès region, was chaired by Prof. Marie
Teuw Niane, Minister and Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic. The
event brought together government authorities, members of the diplomatic corps,
institutional and technical partners, scientists, and young innovators, all
united around a shared vision of expanding Senegal’s scientific and
technological capabilities.

Speaking
at the ceremony, Prof. Niane emphasized the strategic importance of space
science in national development, noting that “space is one of the essential
drivers of sustainable development,” and reaffirmed government support for
projects that enhance innovation and long-term capacity building.
ASES
Director General Maram Kaire underscored the Observatory’s role in elevating
Senegal’s position on the global stage. “This observatory will make Senegal
a player in international scientific cooperation,” he said, highlighting
the institution’s potential to attract research partnerships and boost local
expertise.
The
new facility will include a training institute dedicated to astronomy and
astrophysics, a 600 mm main telescope, four C14 telescopes, and modern research
spaces designed to support advanced scientific exploration. Both the Rector of
the Université Iba Der Thiam de Thiès and the Administrator of the Fondation
Sonatel echoed the observatory’s significance as a catalyst for scientific
education and technological innovation.

The
launch marks a decisive step in Senegal’s long-term strategy to build a robust
national space ecosystem. Once operational, the Observatory is expected to
contribute significantly to positioning Senegal as a future spacefaring nation.
