Rwanda
and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched a new
Biodiversity Window under the Rwanda Green Fund, a major step toward expanding
sustainable financing for conservation and nature-positive investments. The
announcement was made today during COP30, where global leaders are gathered to
advance climate and environmental action.

The
Biodiversity Window is designed to mobilise resources for the protection and
restoration of ecosystems, supporting Rwanda’s broader strategy to strengthen
environmental resilience and promote green growth. By creating a dedicated
mechanism for biodiversity finance, the initiative aims to attract public and
private capital into projects that safeguard natural habitats, enhance
community livelihoods, and reinforce climate adaptation.
Officials
said the new window will help accelerate investment in conservation initiatives
aligned with national and global biodiversity goals. It is expected to support
programmes that protect endangered species, restore degraded landscapes, and
promote sustainable land use practices.
The
Rwanda Green Fund, known locally as FONERWA, has been a key driver of the
country’s climate and environmental agenda, funding projects that bolster
resilience, innovation and green development. The addition of a Biodiversity
Window expands its scope and positions Rwanda as a regional leader in
nature-based financing.

The
launch reflects the growing recognition at COP30 that biodiversity protection
is essential to addressing climate change and sustaining long-term economic
growth. Rwanda and UNDP said they remain committed to strengthening
partnerships that channel more resources into nature-positive solutions across
Africa and beyond.
