The
South Africa Centre for Industry and Technology (SACIT) has signed a landmark
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd and the South
African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) to establish a Research
Chair focused on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the energy
sector. The agreement, formalized on November 10, 2025, aims to leverage
AI-driven analytics to enhance the sustainability, security, and equity of
South Africa’s energy systems.

The
collaboration seeks to harness AI for smarter energy decision-making, including
accurate forecasting of energy demand, optimizing grid performance, and
balancing supply from diverse energy sources to minimize emissions and prevent
overproduction. By integrating AI into energy infrastructure, the partnership
aims to strengthen the country’s energy security, accelerate access to
affordable electricity, and support South Africa’s transition to a more
diversified and resilient energy mix.

Through
research, innovation, and practical solutions, the initiative is expected to
position South Africa at the forefront of AI-enabled energy transformation
while contributing to global best practices in sustainable energy management.
