The
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of South Africa, Prof. Blade
Nzimande has paid a courtesy call to Prof. Khaled El-Enany, recently elected as
the new Director-General of UNESCO.
During
the meeting, Minister Nzimande formally conveyed South Africa’s congratulations
to Prof. El-Enany and expressed support for the vision of the new
Director-General. He also reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to advancing a
sovereign research agenda for Africa.

The
discussions included plans to integrate science and innovation into the UNESCO
Africa Week celebrations and to strengthen the role of science in Africa’s
development. Both leaders emphasized a focus on emerging technologies,
including artificial intelligence, as a key driver for the continent’s
progress.
The
meeting highlighted the shared commitment of South Africa and UNESCO to
promoting scientific advancement, technological innovation, and sustainable
development across Africa.
