Kenya
has officially activated the China Mobile 2Africa East Segment Submarine Cable,
marking a major milestone in strengthening the country’s digital connectivity
and global internet capacity. The announcement was made in Nairobi during the
2Africa Activation ceremony, officiated by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for
Information, Communications and The Digital Economy, William Kabogo.
Themed
“Connect. Innovate. Ignite. Empowering Africa Digital Future Together,” the
event also saw the official launch of the China Mobile AI+ Cloud Network
Convergence Industry Solution. The 2Africa submarine cable system, which spans
33 countries across Africa, Europe and Asia, is designed to deliver up to 180
Tbps capacity and is expected to accelerate cross-border connectivity and
enhance strategic international digital linkages.
Mr.
Kabogo noted that the activation will strengthen Kenya’s position in the global
digital economy while complementing ongoing national initiatives under the
Kenya Digital Superhighway and Creative Pillar, including the deployment of
100,000 kilometers of fibre optic cable, 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots,
nationwide ICT hubs, and better access to government digital services.
He
reaffirmed government commitment to creating a conducive investment
environment, citing the strategic value of international digital infrastructure
in boosting competitiveness, innovation, data movement, and economic
transformation.

The
ceremony was attended by key officials including the Principal Secretary for
ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, China Ambassador to Kenya
H.E. Guo Haiyan, China Mobile Vice President Huidi Lu, China Mobile General
Manager for Network Department Yan Jiang, and CEO of China Mobile International
Lin Erwei, alongside other industry stakeholders.
