Kenya has officially activated the China Mobile 2Africa East Segment Submarine Cable, marking a major milestone in strengthening the country’s digital connectivity and global internet capacity. The announcement was made in Nairobi during the 2Africa Activation ceremony, officiated by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and The Digital Economy, William Kabogo.

Themed “Connect. Innovate. Ignite. Empowering Africa Digital Future Together,” the event also saw the official launch of the China Mobile AI+ Cloud Network Convergence Industry Solution. The 2Africa submarine cable system, which spans 33 countries across Africa, Europe and Asia, is designed to deliver up to 180 Tbps capacity and is expected to accelerate cross-border connectivity and enhance strategic international digital linkages.

Mr. Kabogo noted that the activation will strengthen Kenya’s position in the global digital economy while complementing ongoing national initiatives under the Kenya Digital Superhighway and Creative Pillar, including the deployment of 100,000 kilometers of fibre optic cable, 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, nationwide ICT hubs, and better access to government digital services.

He reaffirmed government commitment to creating a conducive investment environment, citing the strategic value of international digital infrastructure in boosting competitiveness, innovation, data movement, and economic transformation.

The ceremony was attended by key officials including the Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, China Ambassador to Kenya H.E. Guo Haiyan, China Mobile Vice President Huidi Lu, China Mobile General Manager for Network Department Yan Jiang, and CEO of China Mobile International Lin Erwei, alongside other industry stakeholders.
