Angola’s
President, João Lourenço has announced increased investment in the
telecommunications sector, highlighting the upcoming launch of Angola’s first
Earth observation satellite and the expansion of the national fibre optic
network.
Speaking
at the opening of the 3rd Summit on Infrastructure in Africa, President Lourenço said the initiatives form part of the country’s
broader strategy to modernize infrastructure and promote nationwide digital
inclusion.
“In
telecommunications, we are investing in a satellite for Earth observation and
extending the national fibre optic network across the country, so that digital
solutions and technological innovation are within the reach of all Angolans,” he stated.
Angola
has been leveraging satellite imagery from Airbus Defence and Space France to
develop advanced applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring,
construction oversight, and maritime surveillance. These applications utilize
optical satellites, radar, drones, and artificial intelligence to deliver
modern, data-driven insights.
The
forthcoming Earth observation satellite, ANGEO-1, will significantly enhance
national capabilities, enabling the capture of more than 1,000 high-resolution
images per day. The project marks a major step toward strengthening Angola’s
technological sovereignty and positioning the nation as a regional leader in
space-based innovation.
