The
Senegalese Agency for Space Studies (ASES) has announced the commencement of
construction for the Senegal Astronomical Observatory (OAS), marking a historic
milestone in the nation’s space ambitions and establishing Senegal as home to
the largest astronomical infrastructure in West Africa.
Located
in Khombole, in the Thiès region, the OAS will feature a state-of-the-art 600
mm telescope, four C14 telescopes, and an Institute for Training in Astronomy
and Astrophysics, alongside modern research facilities. Designed to be fully
remotely controllable, the observatory will provide scientists from across
Africa and around the world with unprecedented access to the continent’s skies.
The
new observatory is set to play a pivotal role in advancing research, training,
and international collaboration in astronomy and astrophysics. ASES envisions
the facility as a hub for innovation and education that will inspire young
Africans to pursue careers in science and technology while promoting Senegal’s
leadership in the global space and scientific community.
