Ethiopia
is positioning itself at the forefront of Africa’s electric mobility
transformation, leveraging its vast hydropower resources to reduce fuel imports
and advance sustainable transport.
According
to State Minister of Transport and Logistics, Bareo Hassen, the government’s
strategy includes a nationwide ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle
imports and significant tax incentives to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

“Our
next focus is on rapidly expanding the country’s charging infrastructure and
equipping our workforce with the necessary skills to shift from importers to
manufacturers,”
Hassen stated.
With
these measures, Ethiopia aims to strengthen its transport electrification
agenda, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and foster local industry growth —
marking a decisive step in Africa’s green transition.
