The
Counsellor at South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital
Technologies (DCDT), Cynthia Lesufi has delivered a powerful message at the
MWC25 Ministerial Programme during the session titled “Elevating Africa’s
Voice in the Global Digital Dialogue.” Her remarks underscored Africa’s
growing confidence and leadership in shaping global digital policy and
governance.
In
her keynote, Lesufi stressed that Africa’s digital destiny must be defined by
Africans themselves, declaring, “Africa’s digital future will be designed in
Africa, by Africans, for Africans.” She noted the significant progress the
continent has made in asserting its position in international digital fora and
called for stronger collaboration to ensure that Africa’s priorities are
reflected in global digital transformation efforts.

Lesufi
highlighted the upcoming G20 Summit, which will be hosted by South Africa in
2025—the first ever to be held on African soil—as a landmark opportunity to
advance regional connectivity, infrastructure investment, and inclusive digital
growth. She further stressed that the African Union’s coordination role under
Agenda 2063 remains central to aligning national and continental digital
frameworks.

During
a panel discussion that followed, Lesufi joined other high-level stakeholders
in emphasizing the importance of policy stability, regional unity, and private
sector engagement in building Africa’s digital economy. She called for
forward-looking approaches to infrastructure expansion, cross-border
connectivity, and the creation of enabling environments for innovation,
especially for youth.
