Tanzania
and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have held high-level discussions on
the implementation of the National ICT Backbone Project, which will extend
through Lake Tanganyika to Kalemie in the DRC.
The
meeting, held at the Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation Limited (TTCL)
Headquarters in Dar es Salaam, brought together key stakeholders from both
countries to explore ways of enhancing cross-border digital connectivity and
regional integration.

TTCL
Director General, Moremi Marwa led the Tanzanian delegation, while the DRC team
was headed by Prosper Ghislain, Director General of SOCOF. Officials from
Tanzania’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, led by the
Director of ICT Infrastructure, Eng. Leo Magomba, also participated in the
discussions.
The
project aims to strengthen digital communication infrastructure between the two
nations, improve broadband access, and support economic development across the
East African region and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Once
completed, the extension of the ICT backbone through Lake Tanganyika is
expected to accelerate digital transformation in the DRC, enhancing
connectivity and fostering growth within its emerging digital economy.

Tanzania’s
Ministry of Communication and Information Technology reaffirmed the
government’s commitment to ensuring the project’s successful implementation,
highlighting its importance in driving technological advancement and regional
cooperation.
