MTN
Group’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, Nompilo Morafo, has
stressed that collaboration remains essential in advancing Africa’s digital
transformation and strengthening the continent’s role in global economic
governance.
Speaking
at the G20 Pan-African Trade and Investment Conference hosted by the Department
of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) under the theme “Africa’s
Role in Global Economic Governance: Boosting SME Competitiveness – De-Risking
Investment in Africa,” Morafo represented MTN on a high-level panel
discussing ICT Technology and the Digital Economy.
She
highlighted that Africa must work collectively to shape global digital trade
standards, governance frameworks, and investment climates that reflect the
continent’s aspirations for inclusive and sustainable growth. Morafo emphasized
that regional cooperation—aligned with global norms—is crucial to accelerating
digital inclusion, fostering innovation, and enabling small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.

According
to her, strategic ICT deployment through robust digital infrastructure, secure
cross-border data flows, and supportive policies can significantly de-risk
investment and unlock Africa’s entrepreneurial potential. She further noted
that intellectual property protections should be designed to encourage local
innovation while ensuring equitable access to technology across the continent.
The
G20 Pan-African Trade and Investment Conference brought together policymakers,
business leaders, and development partners to discuss strategies for enhancing
Africa’s competitiveness, de-risking investments, and strengthening the
continent’s participation in the global digital economy.
