The
Ethiopian Institute of Artificial
Intelligence (AII) has officially inaugurated a suite of
digital systems designed to modernize and enhance the operations of the Ethiopian Customs Commission. The
inauguration ceremony, held in Addis Ababa, was graced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.), who
served as the guest of honor.
In
his remarks, Prime Minister Abiy commended the initiative, stating that the
newly developed systems will play a crucial role in curbing illegal activities
and improving transparency within customs operations. He noted that the
government remains committed to strengthening such digital innovations as part
of ongoing efforts to combat corruption and theft.

The
digital systems unveiled include an electronic
cargo tracking system for monitoring shipments from origin to
destination, a smart customs border
control and management system to detect and prevent smuggling,
a passenger risk management system
to streamline customs checks for air travelers, and a customs warehouse and agent licensing system
that integrates a multilingual chatbot providing access to the Commission’s
services in four languages.
According
to officials, the systems will contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s digital
transformation goals by improving the efficiency of customs processes, ensuring
the safety and traceability of goods, reducing transportation costs, and
elevating the country’s logistics standards on a global scale.

During
the ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy presented a recognition award to the Ethiopian Institute of
Artificial Intelligence for its outstanding contribution to developing and
deploying the advanced digital platforms.
The
event also coincided with the 7th
Faithful Taxpayers Recognition Ceremony, honoring exemplary
taxpayers who have demonstrated compliance and integrity in supporting the
nation’s revenue efforts.
