In a major move
to address the global impact of artificial intelligence, United Nations
Secretary-General António Guterres has announced an open call for candidates to
serve on a new UN Independent International Scientific Panel on AI. The
announcement was made through the United Nations Office for Digital and
Emerging Technologies.
The new Panel
will be composed of forty leading international experts. Their collective
mission is to provide impartial and evidence-based assessments of the
opportunities, risks, and overall impacts of artificial intelligence. The
establishment of the Panel is seen as a global commitment to ensure that AI
acts as a force for unity rather than division. The goal is to foster AI that
builds trust between nations and keeps the well-being of humanity central to
technological progress.
This initiative
represents a significant effort by the United Nations to create a coordinated
international approach to AI governance. The Panel's findings are expected to
inform critical global policies and discussions.
The Open Call
for applications begins today and will remain open until the last day of
October 2025. The UN is inviting experts from various fields related to AI and
its societal effects to apply.
