The National
Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia has conducted a national consultation
on the implementation of the One Network Area (ONA), a regional initiative
designed to reduce cross-border mobile communication costs and enhance digital
integration across East Africa.

The
consultation brought together licensed telecommunications operators to review
Somalia’s roadmap for joining the ONA and provide feedback on technical and
regulatory preparations. In his remarks, NCA Director General, Mustafa Yasin
Sheikh stated that Somalia’s adoption of the ONA will lower roaming costs,
enable seamless regional connectivity, support digital transformation, and
strengthen economic integration within the East African Community.
The NCA
presented a phased National Roadmap outlining steps to align national laws and
tariffs with regional standards, develop necessary regulations, and ensure
inclusive integration.
The
consultation fostered constructive dialogue between regulators and operators,
reinforcing a shared commitment to affordable and transparent cross-border
communication services.

Somalia aims to
complete ONA adoption as soon as possible, providing consumers with more
affordable roaming options and enhancing digital and economic cooperation
throughout the region.
