Nokia launches cutting-edge innovation centre in South Africa

Global telecommunications leader Nokia has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Innovation Centre in collaboration with the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT). The high-profile launch event brought together government representatives and industry leaders, including Finnish Ambassador Pekka Metso and Nokia South Africa Managing Director Toni Pellegrino. 

The Chief Director for Emerging Technologies and Digital Innovations at DCDT, Jeanette Morwane hailed the centre as a milestone partnership that aligns with South Africa's digital development goals. "This facility represents more than infrastructure—it's a catalyst for homegrown innovation that will position South Africa as a leader in Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies," Morwane stated during the launch ceremony. 

The Innovation Centre marks Nokia's latest strategic investment in South Africa's telecommunications sector, building on decades of infrastructure development. Ambassador Metso emphasized the growing technology partnership between Finland and South Africa, noting that the Centre will facilitate knowledge transfer and skills development. Nokia's Pellegrino revealed plans to collaborate with local universities and tech startups, creating an ecosystem that bridges research and commercialization. 

The facility arrives as the country implements its Digital Economy Masterplan, which prioritizes innovation hubs as key drivers of job creation and technological sovereignty.  With the DCDT's support, the Centre is expected to develop solutions tailored to South Africa's unique challenges—from bridging the digital divide to modernizing key industries like mining, agriculture and healthcare through smart technologies.
