The National Communications
Authority (NCA) has officially notified Multichoice Ghana Limited of its
intention to suspend the company’s authorisation to operate its Subscription
Management Service for Satellite Television Broadcasting (Pay TV Direct-to-Home
Bouquet).
This regulatory action is
being taken pursuant to Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008
(Act 775), following concerns over the company’s current pricing model, which
the Authority considers “inimical to the public interest.”
According to the NCA, the
pricing structure adopted by Multichoice Ghana could potentially harm
consumers, prompting the Authority to issue the suspension notice in an effort
to safeguard public interest and uphold fair business practices in the broadcasting
sector.
Multichoice Ghana now has a
30-day window to respond to the notice. During this period, the company may
submit a written statement outlining its objections to the suspension, present
its views, or propose remedial actions to address the Authority’s concerns.
The National Communications
Authority has reiterated its mandate to ensure that all licensed electronic
communications services operate in accordance with the law and prioritize
consumer protection.
For now, the future of
Multichoice Ghana’s continued operations under its current pricing model
remains uncertain, pending the company’s response to the NCA's notice within
the stipulated timeframe.
Below is the statement issued by the regulator, NCA.
