Mahama has appointed Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, Minister for Lands and
Natural Resources, to act as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology
following the untimely passing of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Dr. Murtala Mohammed, the
substantive Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, tragically lost
his life in a fatal Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6,
2025, en route to an official event in Obuasi. The crash claimed the lives of
eight individuals, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and other
senior government officials and military personnel.

In the wake of this national
tragedy, President Mahama has swiftly moved to ensure continuity in governance
and leadership across key ministries. As part of the immediate measures, the
President has also appointed Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister for Finance,
to take on additional responsibility as Acting Minister for Defence.
According to a statement
signed by Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP and Spokesperson to the President, these
interim appointments are to ensure that the ministries continue to function
effectively during this period of national mourning and transition.
President Mahama has
extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire
nation, calling the incident a devastating blow to Ghana’s leadership and
public service.
Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Buah is
expected to bring his experience and leadership to bear in his new role as the
government continues to advance its environmental and scientific development
agenda amidst a profound national loss.
