Ghana is
mourning the loss of one of its brightest public servants following the tragic
death of Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science
and Technology, in a devastating military helicopter crash. The incident, which
occurred during an official mission, claimed the lives of eight individuals,
including two cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and members of
the Ghana Armed Forces.
Dr.
Murtala Muhammed was widely respected for his dedication to climate resilience,
sustainable development, and environmental policy. His untimely passing is not
only a heartbreaking moment for Ghana but also a significant blow to Africa’s
broader efforts in science and environmental governance.
The
Defence Minister, Hon. Edward Omane Boamah, also perished in the crash,
alongside Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security
Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice Chairman; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former
parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi; Flying Officer Twum
Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo.
President
John Mahama’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, described the event as a national
tragedy and extended government’s sympathies to the bereaved families.
This
incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks our public servants face in
the line of duty and the irreplaceable value of their contributions. Ghana, and
indeed the continent, has lost pillars of leadership, patriotism, and service.
