The Nigeria
Data Protection Commission (NDPC) played an active role in advancing regional
data protection standards during the recent ECOWAS Knowledge Exchange held in
Senegal. Represented by Head of Innovation Mrs. Adaobi Nwankwo, the commission
contributed to critical discussions on harmonizing data governance frameworks
across West Africa.

The three-day
forum united data protection authorities, ICT ministries, civil society
organizations, and private sector stakeholders from across the region.
Participants focused on developing practical strategies to strengthen
cross-border data flows while safeguarding citizen privacy – a balance crucial
for both economic integration and digital rights protection.
Key outcomes
included peer-learning initiatives for nations yet to establish data protection
laws and regulatory bodies, along with action plans to align existing national
frameworks with ECOWAS objectives. The exchange also identified immediate
measures to facilitate secure regional business transactions through improved
data governance protocols.

The
knowledge-sharing platform enabled Nigeria to contribute its regulatory
experience while gaining insights from neighboring countries' approaches to
emerging challenges like AI governance and cross-border data transfers.
This regional
collaboration marks an important step toward creating unified data protection
standards that support ECOWAS' digital economy ambitions while maintaining
strong privacy safeguards.
