Togo has taken
significant strides in building local artificial intelligence expertise through
a comprehensive masterclass on the mathematical foundations of transformers and
large language models. The intensive four-day program, organized by the Togo Data
Lab with support from the Ministry of Industry and Investment Promotion,
brought together nearly 300 participants both in-person and online across
sessions in Kara and Lomé.
Under the
guidance of Dr. Tiebekabe Pagdame and the Togo Data Lab technical teams,
attendees delved into complex AI concepts including self-attention mechanisms
and the critical role of matrix operations in natural language processing. The
curriculum provided participants with fundamental mathematical understanding
required to work with cutting-edge transformer architectures that power modern
AI systems.

This
capacity-building initiative forms part of Togo's broader digital
transformation strategy implemented in partnership with GIZ Togo through the
ProDigiT program. By equipping local professionals and students with deep
technical knowledge of AI systems, the masterclass represents a strategic
investment in developing homegrown expertise that can drive innovation across
sectors.
The successful
execution of this technical training demonstrates Togo's commitment to
positioning itself as a regional hub for artificial intelligence development.
As African nations increasingly recognize the strategic importance of mastering
emerging technologies, such initiatives provide critical foundations for
building competitive digital economies while reducing dependency on foreign
technical expertise.
